The Essex Rebels took to Instagram to confirm the departure of five star players from their roster, signalling a major offseason overhaul.

British basketball’s offseason strikes again. This time it is the Essex Rebels who suffer the cruel fate of their roster being decimated.

Essex’s official Instagram account confirmed the departures of Paige Meyer, Natalie Chou, Quinesha Lockett, Rhema Ogele, and Maria Blazejewski.

This announcement signals one of Super League Basketball Women’s (SLBW) biggest summer roster surgeries, as each of these five players accumulated the most time on the court for the Rebels throughout the 2025-26 season.

Before confirming his own departure from the franchise, head coach Ashley Cookson had led the team to an incredible third-place finish in the SLBW championship standings — recording 13 wins from 18 games.

Essex will struggle to replace such excellence

Usually, clubs may have to contend with replacing one or two integral players for the upcoming season, but not their entire starting lineup.

Not only do the Rebels have to find replacements for their departures, but they must find ones capable of producing consistently at the highest level. Without a hefty budget at their disposal, this seems an impossible task.

While each of these stars will be a miss, it is hard to fathom that the Rebels will find a trio as talented and cohesive as Chou, Meyer, and Lockett.

Quinesha Lockett and Natalie Chou averaged 17.6 and 16.3 points per game, respectively.

Additionally, Paige Meyer was Essex’s primary playmaker — registering a team-high 4.7 assists per game.

Blazejewski and Ogele were both forces to be reckoned with on the glass as they combined for a total of 13.9 rebounds per game.

This dominance in the paint was a key component of the Rebels’ devastating transition offense that few teams created an effective solution to.

No head coach, and now, the talented core that the Essex Rebels once boasted is gone. The franchise is in for a rough offseason, but this wouldn’t be the first time that they pulled off a miracle.
