The Essex Rebels will be desperate to continue the impressive progress they made during the 2025-26 Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) season.

After storming to third place in the regular-season standings, the Essex Rebels will want to continue their progress and attempt to break the stranglehold that the Sheffield Hatters currently hold over the league. However, this will not come without hitting some critical offseason objectives.

Find a defensive paint presence

Offensively, the Rebels are an exciting watch. They have weapons all over the floor that complement each other so well. Paige Meyer, Natalie Chou, and Quinesha Lockett have created a telepathy that most teams would dream of.

Nevertheless, to take the next leap, this team must discover an intimidating figure in the paint when protecting their basket — especially due to the number of talented bigs the Hatters and Gladiators possess.

In my opinion, discovering overseas rookies is most likely the direction Essex will take due to not having the same financial flexibility as all teams in the league, but this will not be enough to bridge the gap the SLBW’s frontrunners have created.

The Rebels need experience, physicality, and talent — something that can only be found in a more seasoned player.

In a perfect world, Manchester Basketball’s center, Maaja Bratka, would be the perfect addition to this roster — albeit highly unlikely.

Bratka averaged 15.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. The Rebels will struggle to find another player who matches so well with their current needs and brand of basketball.

Of course, Manchester’s ambitious vision would most likely make this difficult deal even more impossible.

Retain Nat Chou

Retaining players is always a boring objective, but in the case of Nat Chou and Essex, it could not be more essential.

It would surprise me if teams with bigger budgets and around Europe were not sniffing around Chou and her dominant skillset.

Over the course of the 2025-26 season, the 28-year-old chalked up 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game, while draining 39.2% from deep.

Essex’s recent progression and Chou’s prominent role in the team’s offensive blueprint could be enough to convince the player to hang around for another year, as this may not be the case at an overseas franchise.

Replacing Nat Chou’s production and fit would be a thankless task for the Essex Rebels, so they must do everything in their power to retain the American Forward’s services.
