In a year in which the Caledonia Gladiators are stealing a high percentage of plaudits in Super League Basketball Women (SLBW), the Essex Rebels excel to stay in touching distance of the summit of the regular season standings.

Currently sitting in second position with a 5-1 record, Essex have been one of the most enthralling teams to observe throughout the 2025-26 season.

Quick transition, resilient defensive efforts, and shot-making from all three levels, the Rebels have shown a level of versatility that makes them legitimate title contenders.

Most importantly, this roster possesses an array of talent and depth, allowing it to compete with any team in the league.

Maria Blazejewski and Quinesha Lockett have been simply sensational for Essex this year, but it is another star duo that has really ignited the championship ambitions of this franchise.

Chou’s scoring vital to Essex rebellion

Well, maybe not a rebellion, but given the lack of attention that Essex received before the start of the season, Nat Chou and Paige Meyer have been the catalyst for the wonderful performances this team are turning in consistently.

Chou has become inevitable. Her devastating scoring ability has been a sight to behold – averaging 19 points per game while recording around 58% from deep.

Her wide range of offensive attributes has made her one of the most feared frontcourt options in the entire league. Not only this, but the chemistry she has established with Paige Meyer has become telepathic.

Meyer’s thriving as a playmaker

At 23 years of age, Meyer’s elite playmaking ability and mature decision making has made her the perfect partner in crime for Chou.

Meyer is currently leading the league in assists per game (5.2), with a season-high seven assists coming in a 92-78 triumph over the inconsistent Oaklands Wolves.

In addition, the shift guard has shown when she shifts to a more direct and aggressive mentality, she can become a nuisance on the interior, draining shots and drawing fouls to send her to the line.

For Essex to compete with expert teams such as the Caledonia Gladiators and Sheffield Hatters, both Nat Chou and Paige Meyer must continue to perform consistently.
