Manchester Basketball starlet Irene Oboavwoduo has committed to the Tennessee Lady Vols in the upcoming 2026-27 NCAA campaign.
When one chapter ends, another one begins. Manchester Basketball will still be hurting after their heartbreaking Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) defeat to the Caledonia Gladiators, but Irene Oboavwoduo’s journey is just beginning.
Despite initially signing with Boston College during the early stages of NCAA recruitment, the Manchester guard has committed to Tennessee’s project as they undergo major heart surgery after a turbulent 2025-26 season.
Oboavwoduo was hot property as colleges looked to build upon their rosters, with evolving programmes such as TCU, Clemson, and Oklahoma all reportedly holding interest in the 17-year-old.
At such a young age, Oboavwoduo has shown immense potential and played an integral role in Manchester’s route to the postseason. Throughout the 2025-26 season, she played in 17 championship games, averaging 11.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game, while shooting 36.2% from deep.
Even during Manchester’s 87-82 defeat to the Caledonia Gladiators, the young star showed that high-pressure moments will not affect her ability to perform on the court. Oboavwoduo scored 11 points in around 19 minutes of play, draining 3-5 field-goal attempts, while also contributing on the defensive end by registering two steals.
Is the Lady Vols a good move for the starlet?
Tennessee had some serious problems last year. After constructing a roster bursting at the seams with talent, their season did not pan out in the way that their head coach, Kim Caldwell, had envisaged.
The Lady Vols finished sixth overall in the SEC with a 16-14 record, failing to compete with any of the big dogs of the conference. That included heavy defeats to UConn, South Carolina, LSU, and Vanderbilt — before crashing out of the postseason in a 76-61 defeat to NC State.
While Kim Caldwell ended the season on the hot seat, she remains in situ at Tennessee — the correct decision for the time being.
Tennessee has lost eight players in this year’s Transfer Portal, most notably, Talaysia Cooper, who will now showcase her offensive talents at Ole Miss.
In the midst of all the chaos, Caldwell will be hoping she has constructed a capable roster that believes in the values that she has set out.
With a reported 15 new players committing their future to the Lady Vols, it will be a difficult job to create cohesion quickly. However, this will present Irene Oboavwoduo with an opportunity to stake her claim in the rotation.
As one of the few freshmen to join the programme, the young guard may have to be patient as she wins her coaches’ trust, but Oboavwoduo has proved she is not your usual, run-of-the-mill, young player. She has a mature head on her shoulders and has already competed at the highest level domestically.
Irene Oboavwoduo has an exceptionally bright future ahead, and NCAA fans in the United Kingdom will be eager to see how the next chapter of her journey unfolds.
