Emmanuel Kanwei displayed his devastating defensive prowess during the Newcastle Eagles’ 94-89 victory over the Sheffield Sharks.
Emmanuel Kanwei put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Eagles after an impressive stint with the Essex Rebels, where he averaged 15.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Throughout his time at Essex, it was his scoring ability in the paint that developed at a truly impressive rate; however, this campaign with Newcastle has shown that he is more than just a brute on the offensive end of the floor.
Due to not being prioritised offensively in the same manner as fellow summer recruits Maceo Jack and Rae’Sean Taylor, and the fact that the Eagles had an underwhelming start to the season, Kanwei has been an underappreciated part of this new-look roster.
Nevertheless, after his elite defensive showing against Sheffield, the six-foot-ten center has well and truly announced himself onto the Super League Basketball (SLB) ones to watch list.
Kanwei’s ridiculous rim-protection
There were major flaws that needed addressing in a Newcastle roster that overachieved last year – much to the thanks of Magic Mike Okauru – including the lack of size, rim protection and rebounding.
Kanwei showcased against the Sharks that he can provide this solution – if he can tally up consistent minutes on the court.
The physical center recorded 12 points (6-8 field goals), five rebounds, and four blocks, as Newcastle visibly frustrated a Sheffield Sharks team who will be expecting to challenge for some form of silverware come the end of the season.
Statistics should be the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. Kanwei’s numbers do not represent the exhausting effort that he displayed during this victory.
Not only did he anchor Newcastle’s defence with great effect, but his ability to set screens and back opposition players into the paint, then kicking the ball out to an open shooter was a main factor in a much-improved Eagles offence.
Undoubtedly, players such as Jack, Taylor and Dion Hammond will gain a high-percentage of the plaudits for the resurgence of the Newcastle Eagles. Nevertheless, Emmanuel Kanwei’s two-way showings will be a catalyst for future success.
