It’s official: Megan Mullings will not be returning to the Sheffield Hatters for the 2026-27 Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) season.
For the Sheffield Hatters, for fans of the league, and for Super League Basketball Women itself, the confirmation of Megan Mullings’ departure is nothing short of a disaster.
On July 30, New Zealand-based franchise BNZ Kahu announced Mullings’ signing on the club’s official Instagram page.
This will be Mullings’ return to a team in which she featured during the 2024 season. While BNZ Kahu will be overwhelmed by the capture of the talented veteran, it is a loss that both the Hatters and SLBW will struggle to stomach.
Megan Mullings is simply irreplaceable
After being crowned the 2025-26 SLBW Most Valuable Player and then being awarded the Defensive Player of the Year accolade, Megan Mullings proved to be an unstoppable force in British basketball.
On both sides of the ball, the veteran was truly dominant and was the Hatters’ talisman during their historic quadruple season.
Throughout her 15 appearances in Sheffield’s championship campaign, Mullings averaged a magnificent 18.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.3 stocks per game, while shooting 58.1% from the floor.
Last season, the Hatters boasted the deepest roster in the entire league, hence why their overwhelming success had an air of inevitability surrounding it. With that being said, during the minutes in which Mullings took a well-deserved rest, it was evident that Sheffield were not the same animal.
With no players announced during the offseason so far, it has now become the number one priority for the franchise to retain the services of Antionette Lewis.
While Lewis doesn’t hold the elite two-way qualities of her former teammates, she was also a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball.
Lewis registered 13.6 points, six rebounds, and three stocks per game, while shooting 50.5% from the floor. More minutes will be available to the former Newcastle Eagles star if she opts for a Hatters return, which could be the perfect scenario to accelerate her development.
Regardless of who the Sheffield Hatters choose to replace Megan Mullings, this is the worst start to their offseason plans that they could have imagined.
