No matchup is easy in the NCAA; however, the South Carolina Gamecocks’ potential route to the depths of the NCAA tournament looks favourable.

Led by the legendary Dawn Staley, the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament is always the minimum target for South Carolina.

Three National Championships. Seven Final Four appearances. 500 career wins with South Carolina. This is a resume of a winner. A coach who accepts nothing less than perfection.

This is not enough to win championships and go deep in postseason tournaments. Teams will need a sprinkle of luck alongside a roster that has the nous to win games when the pressure cooker is dialled right up.

South Carolina’s current seeding in the NCAA Committee’s Top 16 has laid the foundations for an exciting postseason push.

Gamecock’s potential grouping allows for a strong start

Coach Staley and her talented core of players will be desperate to get off to an emphatic start to the NCAA Tournament, proving their credentials to make the Final Four at the very least.

As it stands, the Gamecocks have a golden opportunity to do exactly this, with a set of favourable potential opponents awaiting them.

South Carolina is currently placed within “Fort Worth 3” as the one seed, alongside Louisville (two seed), Iowa (three seed), and Michigan State (four seed).

Due to the manner in which the seeding works, South Carolina would await the winner of a 16-seed play-in game to decide their first opponent on the schedule.

If they make it through this tie — which they will be expected to, regardless of the opponent — the Gamecocks will matchup with the winner of Louisville (23-4 record) vs Michigan State (20-5).

Dawn Staley’s players have yet to face off with Michigan State during the 2025-26 NCAA season; however, they have already defeated Louisville 79-77 on December 4.

Madina Okot was in tremendous form during the victory — recording 23 points and 13 rebounds, while draining a go-ahead bucket at the depths and sinking a free-throw to seal the fate of the game.

If anyone were to relay any of this information to Coach Staley, the reply would most likely be laughed off and filled with expletives.

Nothing is a certainty in the world of the NCAA, but it would be foolish to deny that this is a favourable path if South Carolina’s ambition is to reach the latter stages of this prestigious tournament.
