Georgia Gayle and Megan Mullings have become the catalysts for the Sheffield Hatters’ improved set of performances.

Despite boasting an impressive record (6-2) in the Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) championship standings and bullying their way into the Betty Codona Final, it felt like there was still room for improvement when it came to the Sheffield Hatters.

The Hatters strutted into the campaign as the team to beat after a stunning playoff final victory over the Oaklands Wolves in the previous campaign.

However, after suffering defeats to the electric Essex Rebels and championship contenders, the 2025 champions, the Caledonia Gladiators, needed to find a game-changing spark that could ignite this roster into a devastating run of form.

Cometh the hour, cometh the duo. Georgia Gayle and Megan Mullings have proven that they can handle the burden of responsibility as the franchise aspires to lift silverware once again.

Perfect partnership gives Sheffield a dominant edge

For a player to establish themselves as the cornerstone of a franchise, not only must they have the capacity to sprinkle star dust onto everything they touch, they must also bring a versatile skillset to contribute in any area that their teammates require.

Fortunately for the Hatters, Gayle possesses an array of offensive attributes, including both an insatiable scoring touch and a keen eye for playmaking. The 28-year-old is averaging 17.4 points and five assists during the regular-season, with many of said assists benefitting her prolific partner.

In terms of leadership, Gayle has moulded herself into Sheffield’s floor general, in both her actions and vocal demands. A successful team needs a commander of this stature.

Additionally, Megan Mullings is arguably becoming one of the most influential paint-players in the entire SLBW. In terms of multifaceted skillsets, Mullings is becoming integral to everything that makes the Hatters such a success.

Leading the team in scoring, the 33-year-old is recording 18.7 points in championship fixtures. Yet, this is not what necessarily makes Mullings such a magical part of Sheffield’s roster.

If your team owns a roster with the level of shooting prowess that the Hatters do, then second-chance points are everything. The fact that the ferocious forward is snatching 11.5 rebounds per game truly says it all.

As a partnership, Gayle and Mullings are a stunning watch. Pick and Roll play supplemented with effective dribble hand offs have proven to be a useful weapon in Sheffield’s offensive arsenal.

The Sheffield Hatters face a gruelling battle ahead of them to overtake the Caledonia Gladiators at the higher echelons of the SLBW. Nevertheless, the fantastic capabilities of both Georgia Gayle and Megan Mullings suggest that this is a war they can most certainly win.
