While still eagerly awaiting the announcement of the Men’s EuroBasket 2025 roster, it is time to look at which talented Super League Basketball stars could be ready to create a legacy on the international stage.
Great Britain currently sits 48th in the FIBA world ranking, a position that head coach Marc Steutel hopes to rectify in the coming weeks.
If Team GB is to succeed in this competition, it will have to rely heavily on its talent that ply their trade all over the globe – in countries such as Japan, Italy, and Turkey.
Nevertheless, Super League Basketball (SLB) is not short of its own talents that will be eagerly anticipating their own opportunity to make a name for themselves at the highest level. Two stars were named on Steutel’s 24-player preliminary roster on February 13.
Patrick Whelan – Caledonia Gladiators
Caledonia Gladiators struggled to make an impact in the regular season standings this year – finishing ninth overall with just seven wins. However, this does not mean that they do not contain devastating talent on their roster.
Whelan – who was selected in the 2025 Super League Basketball British Team of the Year – had a magnificent individual campaign. The dynamic guard averaged 14.6 points and 3.9 assists per game despite featuring for an inferior franchise.
Internationally, the Gladiators star has been utilised as a rotational piece – clocking up 18.1 minutes and scoring five points per game.
With the rapid rise of 20-year-old sensation Quinn Ellis and the impressive qualifying campaign registered by Amin Adamu, Whelan will face a mammoth task to claw his way into the starting rotation. It should be expected to see the SLB talent make a serious impact with minutes from the bench.
Josh Ward-Hibbert – Newcastle Eagles
After enjoying a shock run to the European North Basketball League finals, a SLB playoff finals appearance, and lifting the inaugural SLB Trophy with the Eagles, it would be understandable if Ward-Hibbert had envisaged sipping on ice-cold strawberry daiquiris in the swelling heat of a foreign country. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old looks set to pull on the Great Britain jersey in EuroBasket this summer.
The 6-foot-5 versatile guard was pivotal for Newcastle this year, occupying several roles on the floor while registering 8.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game.
As the season extended for the Eagles, as did the injury list, and Ward-Hibbert exhibited multi-talented traits as he contributed in any area his teammates needed him. This was never more evident than in the playoffs final game, where the star became an intimidating presence in the paint, grabbing 10 rebounds.
This is something that may heavily work in the player’s favour when EuroBasket finally commences, his ability to contribute in several different aspects of the game could lead to Steutel extending Ward-Hibbert’s minutes on the floor – especially down the stretch in tight contests.
The final roster is yet to confirmed for Great Britain, but the ability to watch domestic talent express their abilities on the international stage would be a fitting reward for Super League Basketball and the success it has displayed in the 2024/25 campaign.
