Despite an opening-day defeat, the Cardiff Met Archers have a lot to be positive about, most notably Laila Anderson’s brilliant performance.
Cardiff were sentenced to a season-opener against the Sheffield Hatters, who are coming off a historic championship campaign. This was always going to end one way.
However, the Archers battled valiantly through the first two quarters of play, before their inevitable demise came as Sheffield’s strength in depth became obvious.
The Hatters’ 103-64 victory over their opponent ended as dominant as the scoreline suggests, but after failing to record a win during the 2025-26 season, Cardiff showed there is reason to believe better things are in store this year.
Alyssa Durazo-Frescas and Ivory Finley both put in spirited performances, and while the duo still has room for improvement, their aggressive styles of play will bode well for the Archers as the season progresses.
In the midst of an energetic showing, it was Laila Anderson who stole the show for Cardiff and will be a young prospect to keep a keen eye on in the coming months.
Anderson shone on both sides of the ball
Much like her teammates, Laila Anderson walked on the court with a tenacious mindset, and it was clear from the opening tip that she did not fear the reigning Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) champions.
With the ball in her hands, her first port of call was to directly attack her matchup. On the other end of the floor, she lulled Sheffield players into a false sense of security before she would flip a switch and claim possession for her team.
In around 32 minutes of action, Anderson recorded an impressive 23 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 steals, while shooting 40% from deep.
The 22-year-old did end the game with a 38.1% field-goal percentage, but given the physical nature of her opponents and their defensive structure, Anderson shouldn’t be penalised too heavily for this fact.
Anderson’s unwillingness to back down to a top-tier opponent proves that her future in the SLBW is bright and that Cardiff’s development strategy can be successful.
Of course, this is the first game of the season, so there is still a question of consistency and how Anderson will handle the opposition adapting to her growing reputation.
Cardiff fans should remain optimistic that the season ahead will most certainly be more successful than the last.
