Super League Basketball (SLB) has announced that Liverpool Basketball will join the league for the start of the 2026-27 season.

While this was undoubtedly the worst-kept secret in British basketball, questions were rightfully being raised about whether Liverpool Basketball would be ready to go for the upcoming SLB season.

However, as of August 5, the Liverpool-based franchise is officially a part of Super League Basketball, adding a fresh vibe to a league desperate for expansion.

Now, it is up to Kings Dock Sports Group LTD — founded and led by Jason Dolan — to announce a competitive roster just months before the start of their inaugural campaign.

Dolan has a long-term vision

Speaking to SLB’s official website, Dolan stated, “We are building for decades – not seasons. That’s why Liverpool was the clear choice.”

Dolan added, “Our ambition is to build a professional club that Liverpool is proud to call its own. One that reflects the character of this city, inspires young people, attracts world-class talent and delivers an unforgettable experience to the Liverpool community every time the doors open at M&S Bank Arena.”

If his actions match his words, the new Liverpool owner will be ready to create a powerhouse of a franchise — one that can compete for the highest honours in British basketball and knock the London Lions off the perch they currently sit upon.

Despite his ambitious vision, there are still several question marks surrounding the club.

Has the expansion announcement come too late?

Unfortunately, the paying public are not privy to the ins and outs of life as a basketball owner — especially one who is funding and constructing a franchise from scratch.

There will be legal hoops that had to be cautiously maneuvered through just to get this project off the ground, and all of that is well above my pay grade.

Nevertheless, even though it is likely that Liverpool will have a roster waiting to be announced, it is difficult to believe that the club can attract a large fanbase in such little time.

The M&S Arena is undoubtedly a phenomenal arena and will be one of the greatest for fans to attend throughout the season, but with a capacity of around 11,000 people, it is unlikely that the team will be capable of a venue of this size.

What will work in the club’s favour is the buzz surrounding the expansion franchise. Season-ticket holders may not be a huge problem during the opening weeks of the season, but as the weeks are ticked off the schedule, it will be interesting to see what levels of attendance the team can attract.

Regardless of the wrinkles left to iron out, this is an exciting day for British basketball fans and the City of Liverpool.
