Caledonia Gladiators’ appointment of Donnie MacDonald must be a success for the sake of Super League Basketball Women (SLBW).
In a surprising turn of events, the brilliant Chantelle Handy has decided to step away from coaching — leaving the Caledonia Gladiators without a head coach.
Handy helped create a winning culture amongst a talented Caledonia roster that recorded 15 wins this season and only missed out on the championship trophy due to the team’s head-to-head record against the dominant Sheffield Hatters.
Momentum is everything in sport. The Gladiators must build on the inertia they created during the 2025-26 SLBW campaign — not just for their own sake, but for the league.
Immediate pressure will be on Donnie MacDonald
It is not often that a head coach steps into a thriving setup. From a hefty budget to a talented core of players (depending on squad retention), Donnie MacDonald will be more than happy with the situation he is inheriting.
This is not MacDonald’s first rodeo. Caledonia’s newest head coach has created an impressive resume during a career that has spanned over 20 years.
His versatility has allowed him to be successful in roles that have ranged from coaching to player development, but most importantly, he has experience in the women’s game and with the Gladiators themselves.
MacDonald was also Handy’s assistant coach as the club lifted the first piece of silverware in their history during the 2024-25 season.
While this clearly suggests that Donnie MacDonald is the perfect candidate for the job, it does not change the expectation that he will be burdened with — in fact, it will only intensify it.
Super League Basketball, in both the women’s and the men’s game, must stay competitive. Franchises winning the quadruple is undoubtedly historic; however, a league thrives on jeopardy, and dominant teams can potentially reduce interest.
SLBW already faces its challenges
At the summit of the SLBW, rosters have never been more talented. Nevertheless, with several clubs such as the Nottingham Wildcats and the Cardiff Met Archers unable to become a fully professional setup, the disparity in budget and finances is significant.
This disparity is unavoidable, but it also creates a gap in talent between top and bottom teams that cannot be bridged by individual talents and experienced coaching — leading to blowout victories that are over before they have even started.
With this being the case, franchises like the Gladiators, Newcastle Eagles, Manchester Basketball, and the Essex Rebels cannot afford to take their foot off the gas if the league wishes to continue to enhance its reputation.
The SLBW has already had missed opportunities to ride momentum due to the landscape of British Basketball.
When the London Lions Women lifted the EuroCup trophy in the 2023-24 season, the franchise could have upped its budget and become a European superpower. Instead, a change of ownership occurred due to the club being placed into administration, and the priority shifted towards the men’s roster.
Super League Basketball Women must stay competitive in order to grow, and the Caledonia Gladiators can play a major role in this happening.
Donnie MacDonald is more than capable of taking the Gladiators to the next level if he is provided with the tools to do the job.
If the franchise can retain the talented core of this roster, then the Gladiators have the potential to steal the championship away from the Sheffield Hatters and create an enthralling rivalry for the loyal spectators.
