With just two championship fixtures remaining, it is time to break down the key scenarios that can still occur.

Where do we start? There are still plenty of twists and turns remaining in the Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) season. Naturally, the best place to start is which team is set to lift the championship trophy.

Sheffield Hatters will clinch the championship with one win

Currently, the Sheffield Hatters sit at the summit of the SLBW championship standings with 14 wins. Only the Caledonia Gladiators (13 wins) can potentially prevent the Hatters from winning their third trophy of the season.

Sheffield needs just one win from their final two games to clinch the championship. Even if Caledonia wins both of their remaining fixtures, Sheffield would still lift the trophy — with the sides tied on total wins.

In this scenario, because the Hatters and the Gladiators split their season series, the title would be decided on points differential in these matchups — Sheffield has outscored Caledonia by eight points.

For Caledonia to win the championship, Sheffield would have to lose both of their remaining fixtures, while the Scottish franchise would have to win both.

Third seed is still up for grabs

Due to head-to-head fixtures, the Essex Rebels currently sit in third position with 11 wins. Both the Newcastle Eagles and Oaklands Wolves also boast the same tally.

As long as Essex win their remaining fixtures against the Nottingham Wildcats and Manchester Basketball, the third seed will be theirs.

However, if they slip up in one or both of the games, the Eagles and the Wolves will have the opportunity to leapfrog their opponents.

Basic maths suggests that Newcastle and Oaklands will have to win more games than Essex to clinch third position; however, these two teams will face off in their next fixture, which will play a huge role in who will overtake the Rebels should the opportunity become available.

If Newcastle defeats Oaklands, they will have to defeat the second-placed Caledonia Gladiators in the final game of the season to cement the third seed.

On the other hand, if Oaklands defeats Newcastle, a final-day victory over the Sheffield Hatters would ensure they clinched the highly sought-after position.

Leicester could pip Nottingham to a final playoff spot

The Leicester Riders (3 wins) are currently set to miss out on the final playoff spot, as they are one win behind the resurgent Nottingham Wildcats (4 wins).

Leicester could steal the eighth and final playoff spot from their rivals if they win both of their final fixtures and Nottingham loses both games.

Due to falling to defeat in their season series, the Riders have no choice but to have a perfect end to their campaign. Their remaining games will see them travel to the Sheffield Hatters and the Cardiff Met Archers.

On the other hand, Nottingham will have two home games against the Essex Rebels and the London Lions.

It is highly unlikely that the Leicester Riders can make the postseason, but as we know in basketball, anything can happen.
