Four games into the regular season, and it is already time to discuss which players are turning in MVP-calibre performances.
Tierra Hodges – Caledonia Gladiators
Many touted Tierra Hodges for a move across the water to a European club in the offseason, given the elite level of performances she exhibited for the Newcastle Eagles last year. Yet, Hodges took her talents all the way up to the sunny land of Scotland.
Caledonia fans will have had high expectations of what the physical forward would bring to a roster that had been bolstered in the summer – she has not disappointed.
Hodges leads the Gladiators in both scoring and rebounding throughout her regular-season appearances – averaging 21 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while also contributing two steals each matchup to showcase her defensive contribution.
The biggest compliment that you can give the former Eagles star is that she has transformed Caledonia from a talented roster with potential into a team that will expect to be lifting some form of silverware come the end of the campaign.
Nat Chou – Essex Rebels
When the season started, the Essex Rebels would not have been on experts’ lips when discussing championship contenders, but the outrageous performances of Nat Chou have changed everybody’s perceptions.
Chou has established herself as one of the deadliest two-way guards in the entire Super League Basketball Women (SLBW).
On the offensive end of the floor, Chou is inevitable – recording 20.3 points and four assists per game, but is also draining around 67% from deep.
Defensively, the Rebels guard is the catalyst for Essex’s rapid transition offence, with a tally of four steals each matchup.
Chou’s ability to work in tandem with the efficient playmaker, Paige Meyer, has put the Essex Rebels into the limelight this season, and she deserves the recognition as an early MVP candidate.
Andrea Daley – Newcastle Eagles
Andrea Daley’s performances in an Eagles jersey have been beyond belief after a difficult first game of the season during a 91-61 defeat to the Sheffield Hatters.
However, this clearly lit a fire within Daley, and now she is showcasing to the league exactly what attributes make her such a dangerous prospect to any opposition.
The versatile has recorded a phenomenal stat line throughout her rookie year so far. Daley is averaging 19.5 points, 13.8 rebounds, four assists, and 3.5 steals per game.
Newcastle needed a capable replacement to fill the gaping Tierra Hodges-sized hole left in their roster, and as it stands, they couldn’t have uncovered a better player.
After an undefeated start to the regular-season (4-0), the Newcastle Eagles will be hopefully that Andrea Daley will continue to dominate the opposition similarly and bring home a trophy that this historic club have been craving.
