Great Britain has announced their 19-player training camp squad ahead of EuroBasket 2025, but one star is missing.
It has been an entertaining inaugural domestic campaign for Super League Basketball Women (SLBW), which saw the Sheffield Hatters shock the regular season champions, Oaklands Wolves, with a thrilling 83-73 victory in the play-off final.
However, now all focus shifts to an intoxicating summer schedule which will see Great Britain compete in EuroBasket 2025 as they look to stun Europe and lift the prestigious trophy when the final buzzer sounds on September 14 in Riga, Latvia.
Despite all the excitement surrounding the announcement of the 19-player training camp roster, there is one shocking omission that they may come to regret.
Georgia Gayle misses out on a training camp spot.
Georgia Gayle has been in scintillating form during the 2024/25 Super League Basketball Women campaign – averaging 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.
Not only this, but the star also led the Sheffield Hatters to the SLBW Playoff Finals, where they shockingly defeated the Oaklands Wolves in a devastating second-half comeback. The side turned around a 13-point deficit to lift the trophy, with the game ending 83-73.
It was the dynamic guard who inspired her teammates to this historic victory and was rewarded with the MVP trophy for her relentless effort – scoring 19 points and snatching five rebounds.
Nevertheless, the sensational performances were deemed inadequate by the Great Britain selection committee. Sam Ashby and Hannah Robb, players who ply their trade in the SLBW for the Wolves and the Caledonia Gladiators, respectively, were both selected ahead of Gayle in the roster.
The 28-year-old can boast a wealth of experience on the international stage, at both youth and senior level – appearing on 10 occasions for her nation.
Yet, it was her electric performances in the 2017 FIBA Under-20 Women’s European Championship that showcased Gayle’s ability to shine against Europe’s elite talent as she registered 11 points and 3.8 assists per game over six appearances.
A roster that contains Ashby, Robb, and the electric Holly Winterburn is not short on talent, however, when you omit a brilliant guard who has recently led her colleagues to a domestic championship and also has 11 years experience of playing on the international stage, the decision is going to seriously raise some eyebrows.
Great Britain Women will open up their highly anticipated EuroBasket 2025 campaign against their Group A rivals Spain on Thursday, June 19.
