Tyia Singleton has become an offensive stalwart in the Super League Basketball Women this year – but is she a candidate for the MVP award?

An unknown entity when she landed in Sheffield in November, Tyia Singleton has transformed herself into an offensive powerhouse over recent weeks.

Singleton struggled to find a level of consistency during the early days of her Sheffield Hatters career – playing in only three games before January the 4th.

However, when the talented forward is not plagued by injuries, she is displaying an intimidating figure on both sides of the ball and it has made her one of the most feared players in British basketball.

The Hatters would have known that they had acquired a monster on the boards when signing the 26 year old, but scoring was originally not the young star’s deadliest weapon.

In her college days, the Sharks star was primarily used for defensive presence rather than her scoring ability.

Singleton began her college career at Rutgers Scarlet Knights, located in New Jersey where she would have to attempt to make an impact from the bench.

During the 2021-2022 campaign, Tyia Singleton finally found herself in the starting rotation and began to implement her prowess in the paint but struggled to leave a lasting impression offensively – scoring just 5.6 points per game but snatching an impressive 5.4 rebounds per game.

Entering the Transfer Portal

Despite not registering monstrous point totals, it was clear that the forward had raw talent and a steely determination that was an asset to any team – Ole Miss pounced on the opportunity to acquire Singleton.

Nevertheless, it was much of the same from a player who was very consistent and reliable in her performances – finishing the 23/24 season averaging 4.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Unfortunately for Tyia Singleton, it was not enough to land on the radars of WNBA franchises who were scouring the collegiate level for their next superstar, after missing out on the sensational Caitlin Clark.

The journey would not end here as the WNBA’s misfortune became Super League Basketball’s gain as Sheffield appear to have struck gold.

As previously mentioned, it took several weeks for the Hatters’ number 22 to get her motor running but now she is striking fear into teams as they scramble to find a way to contain her.

Singleton is now recording devastating numbers that will undoubtedly put her in the MVP conversation when the curtain closes on the season –  registering a much improved 17.2 points and 8 rebounds per game.

Her resounding ability to create second chance opportunities for Sheffield is vital as they bid to hunt down Oaklands Wolves – tallying 4.3 offensive rebound per game.

Sheffield’s superstar has scored 20 or more points on five occasions – with a career high 34 points coming against the London Lions.

After only featuring on 11 occasions this year, injury woes are the only factor that will prevent the 26 year-old from dominating Super League Basketball Women and becoming the face of the league if finances are right for her to stay.

Nonetheless, Tyia Singleton has been a breathe of fresh air to watch as she continues to reign terror on trembling defenses around the league.
