Indiana Fever have been active in free agency, adding six new players. Are they ready to compete for the championship?

Selecting Caitlin Clark in the 2024 WNBA Draft changed the optimism surrounding an inferior Indiana Fever roster.

A high percentage of the media mounted the unrealistic pressure on the young shoulders of the NCAA all-time leading scorer, suggesting it is win or bust in her first season as a pro.

Despite the noise, Clark led the Indiana Fever to their first Playoff appearance in seven years – the longest in WNBA history.

Amber Cox, Fever’s general manager, witnessed the Iowa icon demolish several WNBA records and lead the league in assists during her rookie season.

This was perceived as the perfect moment to make next-level additions to aid the Rookie Of The Year in her aspirations to lift the WNBA Championship Trophy.

Indiana’s roster is now stacked with a mix of experience, defensive resilience and scoring at all three levels – fans should be purring with excitement for the upcoming WNBA season.

Notably, DeWanna Bonner and Sydney Colson have both undertook the gruelling journey to win a championship and have came out the other side coveted in glory.

However, three-time WNBA champion, Natasha Howard, could be the addition that propels Indiana Fever into the elite category this year with her outstanding defensive capabilities – cemented by winning Defensive Player Of The Year in 2019.

Another interesting inbound player is Sophie Cunningham.

Mainly utilized from the bench last year for Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham averaged 8 points and 2 assists per game – statistics that Indiana Fever lacked from their secondary unit in 2024.

Adding these pieces to partner up with an elite playmaker and scorer like Caitlin Clark is a masterstroke by the ambitious Amber Cox.

Nevertheless, Rome was not built in a day. The fanbase in Indiana may have to be patient as the season gets underway as the roster will need to be given time to acclimatise to their new surroundings.

When a franchise makes the decision to make wholesale changes, a grace period has to be allowed for players to gel and understand an alien playbook.

Head Coach Stephanie White will be praying that given the experience of the players being added to the payroll, the duration of the teething issues will be greatly reduced.
