Oaklands Wolves top the Super League Basketball Women standings with impressive 100% record after 10 games.

Oaklands Wolves have lived up to their name during the first 10 games of the season by mauling all opponents in their pursuit of a championship.

Since entering the league in 2016, Oaklands have struggled to establish themselves as a meaningful force in the league -only qualifying for the post-season twice in their existence.

However, fans of the side from St Albans finally have something to cheer about in a year that even the most knowledgeable experts could not have envisaged.

Super summer signings

After being appointed in 2023, head coach Lee Ryan, emphasised the importance of youth development and implemented a new training regime to help improve the fortunes of the struggling side.

Nevertheless, nine new recruits were added to the new look Wolves – including the defensive general Danielle McCray and menacing star player Sam Ashby.

Ashby and McCray have provided ability at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

Sam Ashby is leading the charge for the side that sits top if the standings – averaging 13.6 points per game and 1.8 steals per game.

In contrast, Danielle McCray has become one of the most intimidating presences in the league – snatching 7.3 rebounds per game and 2.4 steals per game.

Regardless of how dominating the two signings have been for the Oaklands Wolves, the way every player is finding a way to contribute to match-ups is more impressive.

Not all plain sailing

Despite Oaklands dominating the regular season standings, they have already had to suffer turmoil earlier in the season.

St Alban’s war machine were put to the sword in the Super League Basketball Trophy Finals in their first ever opportunity to lift silverware in their history – losing the electric tie to the Caledonia Gladiators in heart-breaking fashion – 61-59.

The final had the crowd gasping for air as Oaklands forward, Lavinia Da Silva, missed a lay-up at the buzzer beater which resulted in the agonising defeat.

Coach Ryan will hope that his team will use the excruciating pain to fuel their run to the post-season.

A historic regular season will mean nothing if they cannot boast a championship when the final buzzer sounds.

Teams throughout the league will be formulating a plan to recreate the antics of Caledonia and put a swift end to the unbelievable unbeaten streak Oaklands has put together.

There is no doubt that fans are in for an exhilarating second half of the season.
