Super League Basketball Women is thriving – which stars are making the game shine bright?

It has been a turbulent couple of weeks in Super League Basketball that has dampened the positivity surrounding the sport after such a successful Trophy finals weekend in Birmingham.

Plagued by licensing issues, it is easy to forget that the product the British game is currently producing has wet the appetites of basketball purists.

The male league has deservedly been hailed for the increasing talent on the floor, however, female basketball is thriving on and off the court.

From the outstanding Oaklands Wolves to the electric Newcastle Eagles – the league is rife with tantalising individual talent.

With so many newcomers laying their eyes on the ever-growing sport for the first time, this article will present three sensational stars to keep an eye out for.

Claire Jacobs – Nottingham Wildcats

Currently leading the league in scoring, Jacobs has shown the league that she is a menace on the offensive side of the floor – averaging an exceptional 24.2 points per game.

While the Wildcats currently sit ninth overall in the regular season standings, the Australian guard has shown a stomach for responsibility.

At 23 years-old, Jacobs has shown maturity beyond her years and consistently excelled in all of her performances – scoring a season high 35 points against the struggling London Lions.

Despite her scoring prowess being her most valued attribute, the young star has shown her resilience on the defensive end of the floor – recording 3.3 steals per game.

If the vultures around Europe are not already swooping for Claire Jacobs’ signature then she could be an inspiration for young women throughout the grassroots level of the British game.

Jada Guinn – Newcastle Eagles

Everyone has that one friend where everything they touch seems to turn to gold dust – this defines Jada Guinn.

Offensively, Guinn is relentless and keeps every defender on the backfoot.

Averaging 21.6 points per game, the University of Tennessee graduate has quickly established herself as a fan favourite on Tyneside with her exciting style of play.

Known as a dynamic scorer in college, Newcastle’s number 24 has displayed her basketball intelligence on countless occasions this year by feeding her teammates at every opportunity – registering 5.4 assists per game.

Guinn is another young guard who plies her trade on British shores – at 24 years of age, she has the world at her feet and will be in the MVP conversation come the end of the year.

Tyia Singleton – Sheffield Hatters

Last but certainly not least, Tyia Singleton has established herself as a double-double sensation this year – averaging 25.7 points per game and 11.3 rebounds per game in January,

Like many overseas recruits, fans had to rely on college highlights to determine what Singleton would bring to their team.

Spectators have not been disappointed as the forward has shown she is a dominant presence in the paint, who can contribute on both sides of the ball.

Averaging 17.1 points per game, Singleton has featured in seven games so far this year – scoring a season high 34 points against the London Lions.

Sheffield Hatters supporters will hope to see the American forward stay on the floor for longer stretches as she currently clocks 23.5 minutes per game.

With each passing fixture the graduate out of Ole Miss is displaying more commanding performances on the floor.

Expect big things from the 26 year-old in the remainder of the Super League Basketball Women season.
